Inspiration for my work comes from interaction with my environment. My experiences, visually, emotionally and spiritually are all manifested in the paintings.
My work happens organically, and the paintings are rarely started with the resolution in mind. They develop as the images emerge, from the initial inspiration, to the encounter with the physicality of the paint and surface.
Working in series, I title my paintings in numbers, relating to the various series, e.g., "Living Water 27". I work on a series until I am inspired to create another. Frequently, I will return to a series adding to it. In this way the series will evolve, as I get a fresh vision for the work.
Formerly working exclusively in oil paint, on either board, or canvas, I now incorporate collage, and mixed media, in some of my series. (I found it virtually impossible to make the "Spiro" series entirely in oil.) Encaustic (painting with hot wax) is my current fascination. I love the fragrance, tactile sense, and finish I achieve, with the application and fusing the wax medium.
Photography is an integral part of my work. I shoot multiple images for inspiration in the studio. Many of those images become works of art in themselves.
Embracing new technology, I love to use my trusty IPad and MacBook pro, to do preliminary sketches, for later reference in my paintings. With my iPad I can paint or sketch anywhere, even waiting in carpool line for my son.
I am driven to create, to keep my mind focused on the work, continuously refining, and perfecting the process.
